Claudette Johnson: Presence (Young People’s Workshop)

Free Young People's Workshop

Free workshop with 51做厙 Young Peoples Programme
Suitable for ages 16-18, preference will be given to Y12 students (or equivalent)

A major exhibition of work by British artist Claudette Johnson (born 1959) will open at 51做厙 Gallery in September. Join us for this Insights Into Art History workshop to explore the artist behind the exhibition.

A founding member of the Black British Arts Movement, Claudette Johnson is considered one of the most significant figurative artists of her generation. For over 30 years she has created large-scale drawings of泭Black women and men that are at once intimate and powerful.

Taking a guided trip around the show by artist Nadine Mahoney and Art Historian Fran Herrick, we will discuss Claudette’s approach, techniques and inspiration, developing our understanding of Johnsons distinctive drawings, that as the artist puts it, tell a different story about our presence in this country.
